One of the great mysteries of the NHL offseason for Minnesota Wild fans isn’t whether the team will acquire a star player or whether Quinn Hughes will eventually join his brothers in New Jersey.
The real question is:
Who’s more obsessed with the Wild right now, Devils fans or Red Wings fans?
As a Wild fan, I’ve been annoyed, baffled, and entertained watching both fan bases completely lose their collective minds over Minnesota related rumors over the last year. The competition is fierce, but each side brings something unique to the table.
The Devils Fan Experience
Let’s start with New Jersey.
The Quinn Hughes discussion has evolved from a hockey rumor into a full blown psychological experiment.
Any Wild fan knows that Michael Russo is as connected to the team’s sources as anyone out there. And yet, seemingly any time he reports something involving Hughes, Devils fans immediately swarm the replies. They analyze every word. They dissect every sentence. They quote tweet every update.
Then, somehow, after spending multiple straight days discussing his report, they inform everyone that Russo doesn’t know anything and isn’t a source worth listening to.
It’s remarkable.
The cycle usually goes something like this:
- Russo reports that nothing significant has changed.
- Devils fans spend the next several days talking about it.
- Devils fans explain why Russo is wrong.
- Devils fans continue talking about it.
If Russo truly had no idea what he was talking about, wouldn’t everyone simply ignore him?
Instead, every report becomes another round of “Here’s why Russo doesn’t know anything about Quinn Hughes,” followed by HUNDREDS of comments discussing what Russo just said about Quinn Hughes.
That’s not skepticism.
That’s obsession.
To Be Fair, Wild Fans Aren’t Innocent Either
Before we Wild fans start handing out obsession awards, let’s acknowledge reality.
Quinn Hughes is a Minnesota Wild player today. That’s a fact. However, he’s also not signed long term beyond his current deal. That’s another fact.
Those two realities can exist simultaneously.
Wild fans have every reason to want Hughes locked up for the next several years and some apprehension is understandable until that happens. But some Wild fans have spent just as much time arguing with Devils fans online as Devils fans have spent trying to convince everyone Hughes is eventually headed to New Jersey.
The Devils fan base has absolutely pushed this discussion into overdrive, but Wild fans (including myself) haven’t exactly resisted the temptation to engage.
Every rumor becomes a debate. Every quote becomes evidence. Every social media interaction becomes a conspiracy theory.
At some point, everyone involved needs to acknowledge the obvious:
Nobody actually knows what Quinn Hughes is going to do. Not Devils fans. Not Wild fans. Not the people pretending they’ve already cracked the code.
Until a contract is signed, both sides will continue arguing. That’s what makes this whole thing so entertaining.
The Red Wings Fan Experience
While Devils fans obsess over Quinn Hughes, Red Wings fans have spent much of the offseason convincing themselves that Dylan Larkin should command the greatest trade package since Wayne Gretzky.
The obsession has cooled recently, mostly because everything involving Larkin has hit a standstill while Detroit works through its front office situation.
But when discussions were at their peak, it was incredible content.
Many Detroit fans would argue that a Larkin trade should bring back a return comparable to what teams would demand for Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, or another franchise defining superstar.
Then, in the very next sentence, they’d explain why Larkin is actually part of the reason Detroit hasn’t returned to the playoffs consistently.
Well, which one is it, Red Wings fans? Because those two arguments don’t really coexist. Can’t have it both ways.
If Larkin is the elite franchise centerpiece whose value is nearly impossible to match, then he’s obviously an incredibly valuable player.
If he’s been part of the problem and underperformed expectations throughout his tenure, then teams aren’t emptying their prospect pools and draft cupboards to acquire him.
The mental gymnastics have been unbelievable.
Wild Fans Need a Reality Check Here Too
That said, Minnesota fans aren’t exactly operating from a position of complete objectivity either.
Some Wild fans have convinced themselves that a package of two good-not-great prospects, a couple first-round picks, and some cap maneuvering is enough to land Larkin.
At this point, that just doesn’t seem realistic.
Everything that’s been reported suggests Detroit would require significantly more value if they ever decided to move their captain.
More importantly, a potential deal likely becomes complicated enough that a third team would need to be involved to help balance assets, contracts, or salary cap implications.
Wild fans can’t sit here laughing at Detroit fans while simultaneously proposing trade packages that would get hung up on before the first call ended.
So Who Wins?
As of today? I still have to give the edge to Devils fans.
Red Wings fans have quieted down lately due to the uncertainty surrounding Detroit’s management situation and the lack of movement on the Larkin front.
But Devils fans remain locked into full-time Quinn Hughes watch.
Every Russo tweet gets analyzed. Every Hughes quote gets scrutinized. Every family photo becomes evidence. Every rumor becomes a debate. It’s a level of commitment that’s frankly impressive.
The funny part is that both the Devils and Red Wings fan bases probably believe Wild fans are the obsessed ones. And maybe they’re right.
Because if there’s one thing we’ve learned over the last year, it’s that whenever Quinn Hughes or Dylan Larkin gets connected to Minnesota, everybody completely loses their ability to think rationally.
Some fan bases just hide it better than others.
